What we do

School governors are there to ensure that schools are well run.  They have an important part to play in raising school standards by working with the head teacher and senior management team to ensure pupils get a good education.

School governors are the largest volunteer force in the country.  They represent people from many walks of life: school staff, parents, the local community and even the church or organisation connected to the school.  This means that school decisions are made by people with a wide range of experience and views.

Governors serve on the school's Governing Body. The Governing Body has a strategic role and the key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

The Head Teacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the Governing Body.

Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the Governing Body.  Decisions are the joint responsibility of the Governing Body.

Becoming a governor could be a way of making a real difference to local children and of learning new skills. For further information, please visit the Manchester City Council website.

For induction of new governors, the school prepares a pack of information and/or provides details of where to find appropriate resources. This includes:

  • Schools "Guidelines for Governors"
  • School prospectus
  • Governing Body committees (inc. terms of reference)
  • Governor contact details
  • MCC's governor training programme
  • Future meeting dates
  • Calendar of school events
  •

What do our committees do at Chorlton CofE Primary?

The Governing Body (GB) has 12 members:

  • 3 Parent Governors (elected by the parents/carers of pupils)
  • 3 Foundation Governors (chosen by the Parish/Diocese and including the vicar of St Clement's Church)
  • 1 Local Authority Governor (selected by the LA)
  • 1 Staff Governor (elected by the school staff)
  • 1 Head Teacher
  • 3 Co-opted Governors (appointed by the GB)

The Governing Body may also appoint Associate Governors with specific skills needed to supplement the Governing Body or its committees.

There are four Full Governing Body meetings a year, where all decisions and policies are discussed and approved. There are two committees which meet four times a year and make recommendations to the full Governing Body: the School Improvement Plan (SIP) Committee and the Resources Committee (responsible for finance and staffing).

All governors are members of the Governing Body and they also attend either SIP or Resources Committee. The Head Teacher attends all the meetings, and our financial service advisor attends Resources Committee. We also have a clerk who attends all the meetings and is responsible for preparing minutes and organising related paperwork, and advising on procedural matters.

  • Full Governing Body minutes
  • Resources Committee minutes
  • School Improvement Plan (SIP) Committee minutes

As well as our regular meetings, we are involved in the following:

  • We organise an annual school open evening, working with the PTA and school staff, to which all parents, carers and pupils are invited.
  • The Head Teacher has regular briefing meetings with the Chair of Governors and also with chairs of the committees when needed.
  • We can access formal training courses run by Manchester City Council as well as informal training 'get togethers' which we organise amongst ourselves.
  • Some of us have responsibilities as 'link governors' for particular activities in the school. Link governors liaise with relevant staff in school in order to learn more about how the topic is taught or the policy implemented, to share ideas and to feed these discussions back into our committees.
